John 8:12-36 – In this passage, Jesus makes two huge claims about himself. He is the Light of the World and the only source of true human freedom. The claim of being the Light of the World is a claim to be the fulfilment of Isaiah’s prophecies of one who would bring light not just to Israel, but to the nations, overcoming the darkness. Jesus then goes on to say that it is only through continuing in his word that we will know the truth, and that this truth will set us free. No other religion, political movement, ideology or constitution can do this. Only Christ – the only truly free man – can do this, as this sermon explains.
