Jesus Makes New & Better Wine

26 April, 2026

John 2:1-11: At face value, the episode in Cana of Galilee looks like a miracle and nothing more. Jesus turned water into wine and so a lot of people at the wedding got to drink some of the finest wine imaginable. But it is actually one of the seven-sign miracles John records in his Gospel. Which means its significance goes far beyond the action and its immediate effects. By making new and better wine, Jesus is signaling that the Old Covenant, with blood sacrifices that could never deal with sin once and for all, is coming to an end. In its place is the New Covenant in his blood – better wine surpassing the old, bringing true forgiveness and reconciliation with God.
