Matthew 13:24-30 – Why does an all-powerful, loving God permits evil and suffering? Using Jesus’ parable of the wheat and the tares in Matthew 13, this sermon looks at why good and evil must coexist until the final “harvest,” when Christ returns to judge perfectly. This judgement is necessary, delayed, and inescapable. Its delay demonstrates God’s patience and mercy, allowing sinners time to repent and “weeds” to become “wheat.” Christians should therefore avoid both naïve optimism and despair, confronting suffering with love while boldly living and sharing their faith. Ultimately, believers can trust that evil will be defeated and God’s kingdom established.
