John 7:1-44 – This passage presents us with a bewildering array of opinions about Jesus. Some thought him a good man, others a deceiver; some believed him demon-possessed, while others wondered whether he was the Prophet or the Christ. Yet amid these divisions, Jesus gives his own testimony. He is the righteous Son, sent by the Father to speak his words, do his will, and glorify him. And far from being the law-breaker his enemies accused him of being, Jesus fulfiled God’s righteous purposes. Because of this, he is able to say to all that thirst – who recognise that they cannot get what they truly need anywhere else – he bids to come, to believe, and to drink, that their thirst might be quenched.
