John 5:30–47: Jesus answers his hostile accusers by calling five witnesses: John the Baptist, his miraculous works, the Father, the Scriptures, and Moses. Each witness confirms that Jesus is the promised Messiah and Son of God, while exposing these leaders’ unbelief. Although they know the Scriptures thoroughly, they refuse to come to the one to whom Scripture points. Yet at the same time as telling them very hard truths about themselves, Jesus continues to hold open the door to them for salvation, eternal life, and resurrection. In all of this, he is our pre-eminent witness – the evidence of God, and the demonstration of his power, his love, and the life he brings.
