Mark 4:1-20: Why did Jesus teach in parables? Parables are memorable teaching tools that both reveal truth to receptive listeners and conceal it from hardened hearts. The Parable of the Sower is not only powerful in its own right, but it gives us the keys to unlocking the other parables as well. It’s central message is that our response to God’s Word depends on the condition of our heart: hardness, distraction, or worldly concerns prevent spiritual growth, while receptive hearts bear the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. Ultimately, the parable highlights humanity’s sinful condition and the need for God’s grace, through Christ, to transform hearts of stone into hearts that are receptive to Him.
