John 2:12–25: The miracle at Cana where Jesus made new and better wine pointed to the passing of the Old Covenant in the blood of animals, and the coming of the New Covenant in Jesus’s blood. This passage carries on a similar theme of the passing of the Old and the coming of the New, only this time its the Temple in mind. Jesus’ cleansing of the temple not only rebukes the House of Merchandise, by temporarily halting its operation, he is signaling that its permanent end is coming. Just as a New Covenant is coming, a New Temple is coming. One that is not made of stone, but of flesh: himself. He is the final temple, and we his people are part of it.
