Jonah 3

Book: Jonah

The third chapter of Jonah records one of the most astonishing moments in Scripture: a pagan city repents, and so too does God – albeit a very different kind of repentance. Having fled, been judged, and delivered, Jonah finally obeys God’s call and preaches judgment to Nineveh. Against all expectation, the people believe God, turn from their violence, and cry out for mercy. Their repentance is swift, comprehensive, and deeply symbolic. Even more striking, God is said to “repent” turning away from the judgment he had threatened. This chapter reveals a sovereign God who prepares hearts, responds to repentance, and deals personally and relationally with people in history.
