Why is Good Friday “Good”? As someone once said, “God’s kingdom is a series of victories cleverly disguised as defeats”. The crucifixion is the ultimate victory cleverly disguised as defeat. From the scourging to the crown of thorns; from the piercing of his hands and feet to him giving up the ghost – all appeared to be defeat. Yet through this God was enacting the decisive victory in his plan of redemption. On the cross, Christ bore and broke the curse of sin on behalf of humanity, fulfilled Old Testament prophecies, and bruised the Serpent’s head. Every defeat was in fact victory, which is why we can indeed call this day “Good.”
