Romans 6:1–11
In this passage, the Apostle Paul makes the remarkable claim that Christians have died with Christ and have been raised with him. Just as remarkable is his claim that in baptism, we are united to Christ in his death and burial. But is a baptised person automatically guaranteed salvation? No, baptism is the God’s sign and seal of God’s covenant, marking a new identity and status in Christ. But Paul makes it clear throughout this epistle that salvation is through faith alone. Those who are baptised are therefore called to live up to their baptism, by being dead to sin and alive to God through Jesus Christ, all of which can only be done through faith.
