Why do we go to church each week? Many answers are given to this — but actually this is the wrong question. The real question we should be asking is this: why does God call us to go to church each week? The primary answer is that God has covenanted with us, yet we break the terms of that covenant each week through our sin, so we need to “renew” covenant every week. This sermon shows how God calls us to church each week to renew covenant with him, which we do by confessing our sin and receiving his pardon; by being consecrated to him through his word; and by being invited to have communion with him as a sign of restored covenant. We are then commissioned to go out and serve him in the week ahead, taking dominion as his covenant people.
